JUNK WORKSHOP

Great team led session today, Ben Heaney joining Ruth Barnett from the Abingdon Music Centre and 15 Primary school children from in and around Abingdon to give a Junk inspired holiday workshop.

The workshop focussed on making good and interesting music with general recycled materials: crisp packets, water bottles, boxes, tubes, lids etc. and also using dust pans, brushes, bins and other kitchen utensils. The idea was to reinvent what we might throw away by making use of it as something else… in this case a musical instrument.

The children were put through their paces and were fairly exhausted after nearly three hours. They worked really well and seemed to thoroughly enjoy exploring the world of Junk inspired music.

The workshop culminated with an informal performance for family and friends during which the children showed off what they had learnt.

For the event a specially composed rhythm song “Keep Britain Tidy” was created and the children, dubbed “The Sweet Rappers”, gave the work’s debut an energetic and joyful performance.
